Radisson Safari Hotel Hoedspruit has joined Radisson Hotel Group’s Verified Net Zero programme, becoming its first participating property in Africa. The designation applies to an existing 138-room hotel in South Africa’s Limpopo province, rather than a new hotel opening.

Announced on 27 October, the move extends a programme already present in the UK and Nordic markets. It also provides a case study in adapting an operating safari property, where energy purchasing, suppliers and everyday departmental practices all affect the outcome.

What Verified Net Zero covers at Radisson Hoedspruit

Radisson’s programme combines emissions reductions with credits for the emissions that remain. TÜV Rheinland independently verifies compliance with the programme’s hotel methodology. The label should not be read as a claim that the property produces no emissions.

At Hoedspruit, renewable electricity comes from on-site solar generation and purchased renewable guarantees of origin. A solar wheeling agreement is due to contribute from 2027, allocating contracted solar production through the national grid. That future arrangement is separate from the measures already supporting the hotel’s designation.

Electrification includes kitchen equipment, hot-water heat pumps and utility vehicles. Radisson also reports full wastewater recycling through the hotel’s treatment plant, with waste sorting, composting and reduced packaging supporting its landfill-diversion ambition.

The owner’s role in the transition

Skift reports that Hoedspruit is the group’s tenth Verified Net Zero hotel and among its first managed properties to join the programme. Earlier participants were predominantly leased hotels, making this an important change in where the investment decision sits.

In a managed hotel, the property owner and operating company must align around the costs and expected benefits. Skift’s reporting identifies renewable electricity procurement as a particular challenge in South Africa and says the property’s owner is funding the transition.

That distinction matters for expansion. A programme developed largely within leased properties must also work across different ownership structures, local energy markets and supplier capabilities if it is to reach Radisson’s stated target of 100 hotels by 2030.

Connecting the programme with hotel operations

The hotel serves both leisure and business guests, with private-pool suites, a spa, two swimming pools and meeting facilities. Its restaurants offer local and international food, with lower-carbon choices forming part of the guest proposition.

Radisson is introducing carbon-labelled menus with Klimato and addressing residual emissions through credits linked to South Africa’s GRASS project. These measures place purchasing and menu decisions alongside engineering changes in the operational brief.

WINC Wire previously covered Radisson’s global Verified Net Zero ambition and its 100-hotel milestone in Africa. Hoedspruit links those two strategies through an existing asset.

For owners and management teams, the practical lesson is the need to distinguish direct operational reductions, purchased renewable electricity and residual credits. Clear reporting on each will be central to explaining what the designation delivers.
