The US management company will introduce four more brands as it expands its portfolio, with extended stay remaining central to its operating model.

Sandpiper Hospitality plans to add more than a dozen hotels to its US management portfolio over the next 90 days, extending its reach in the Southwest and Midwest while bringing four additional brands into the business.

The Richmond, Virginia-based operator outlined the expansion in a 19 October announcement. Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn, Fairfield Inn & Suites and Holiday Inn Express will join its brand mix. Other additions will remain within its established extended-stay specialism, including ECHO Suites, Extended Stay America and WoodSpring Suites.

Sandpiper Hospitality widens its operating remit

The company describes its current portfolio as more than 75 hotels open or under management. Its forthcoming additions involve both new partners and existing clients expanding their relationship with the operator.

President and chief executive Jim Darter linked the expansion to opportunities for established employees as well as incoming teams. He said: “We’re proud this growth creates new opportunities for our clients, our company and our associates.”

The announcement does not identify every property, provide a combined room count or set out individual handover dates. The 90-day programme should therefore be read as a management expansion plan, rather than confirmation that a dozen newly built hotels have already opened.

An extended-stay foundation

Sandpiper’s company history traces its origins to demand between conventional hotel visits and residential tenancies: guests needing accommodation for a week, several months or longer. Its first WoodSpring Suites was built in Chesapeake, Virginia, in 2009.

After initially using third-party management, the group established Sandpiper Hospitality in autumn 2012 with four properties. That history helps explain why extended stay remains central to its identity even as its brand coverage becomes broader.

The company lists revenue management, hotel turnaround work and the management of both extended-stay and transient hotels among its services. Those capabilities give the expansion an operating context beyond a larger property count: different stay patterns have to be supported within the same management organisation.

A portfolio spanning several hotel formats

The operator’s published hotel directory already includes Courtyard in Reno and Residence Inn properties in Gainesville and Lakeland, alongside ECHO Suites, Everhome Suites, Extended Stay America and WoodSpring Suites locations.

That existing mix matters when interpreting the latest announcement. Sandpiper is adding brands to its own management portfolio, not announcing the creation of those brands or claiming that every incoming hotel represents a new market for the wider hotel companies.

Its directory also includes properties in locations such as Brownsville, Texas; Nampa, Idaho; and Reno, Nevada. The new programme extends a geographically dispersed business rather than starting a national network from scratch. Individual hotel economics and ownership arrangements were not disclosed in the expansion announcement.

The company’s leadership directory identifies dedicated responsibilities for business development and transitions, revenue management, human resources, technology and operations. It lists Victor Cruz as senior vice president of business development and transitions and Paige Derdevanis as vice president of human resources. That division of responsibilities is relevant to a programme involving multiple brands and incoming hotel teams.

People development becomes part of the growth test

Sandpiper’s careers information describes cross-departmental rotations involving areas such as front office, food and beverage and housekeeping. It also sets out leadership training and mentoring, access to professional certifications, workshops and online learning.

These are company-described programmes, not independently measured retention or promotion outcomes. They nevertheless show how Sandpiper presents the connection between property growth and internal career development.

For hotel leaders, the operational question is how consistently that support reaches each incoming team. A wider brand mix creates a need to explain different service requirements clearly, establish responsibilities during transitions and give managers a reliable route to specialist help. Growth can create progression opportunities, but a larger portfolio alone does not establish their quality.

Sandpiper’s next meaningful milestone will be the completion of the announced hotel additions, with property-level detail providing a clearer view of the expanded operation.
