Marriott International has appointed Ming Choo Ling as Chief Human Resources Officer for its Asia Pacific excluding China region, strengthening its regional people leadership as the company continues to expand across one of its most important growth markets.

Based at Marriott’s APEC regional headquarters in Singapore, Ming Choo will join both the APEC and Global Human Resources leadership teams. In her new role, she will lead the company’s people strategy across the region, with a focus on leadership development, associate engagement, talent and culture initiatives, and expanding access to career opportunities.

She succeeds Andrew Newmark, who has retired after 25 years of leadership with Marriott, including his role as Chief Human Resources Officer for the APEC region. Newmark’s tenure placed him at the centre of Marriott’s people strategy across a region that has seen significant portfolio growth and organisational change over the past decade.

Ming Choo joins Marriott with more than 25 years of human resources leadership experience across Asia and international markets. Prior to this appointment, she served as Chief Human Resources Officer for Home Care Greater Asia at Unilever, where she worked with senior leadership on organisational capability, talent development and large-scale transformation initiatives.

Her career has included country, regional and global HR leadership roles, giving her exposure to people strategy across diverse markets and business environments. That background will be relevant at Marriott, where the APEC region brings together mature hotel markets, high-growth destinations, resort locations, urban business centres and multiple brand segments.

In her new role, Ming Choo will support a workforce of nearly 116,000 associates across Marriott’s APEC business. The company currently operates more than 760 hotels across 27 brands in 22 markets and territories in the region, making the people agenda central to both operational delivery and future growth.

Rajeev Menon, President, Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International, said Marriott’s belief that taking care of associates is fundamental to taking care of guests remains one of the company’s strongest competitive advantages. He said that as Marriott continues to grow across APEC, developing leaders, strengthening culture and creating opportunities for people will become even more important.

That framing is important because Marriott’s growth in Asia Pacific is not only a development story. Hotel signings and openings create visible expansion, but sustained performance depends on the ability to recruit, train, retain and develop teams across highly varied markets. A regional CHRO role therefore sits close to the operating model.

The company has identified three strategic priorities for Ming Choo’s mandate: Growing Great Leaders, Investing in Associates and Expanding Access to Opportunity. Together, these priorities point to a people strategy focused not only on filling roles, but on building leadership capability and widening career pathways across the region.

For a hotel group of Marriott’s scale, leadership development is particularly important. Properties across APEC operate under different brands, ownership structures and market conditions, but the guest experience still depends heavily on the quality of property-level leadership. General managers, department heads and frontline supervisors are the people who translate brand standards into daily service behaviour.

Associate engagement will be another central part of the role. Hospitality remains a people-intensive business, and the quality of the employee experience has a direct bearing on guest satisfaction, retention and service consistency. In markets where skilled hospitality talent is in high demand, engagement cannot be treated as a soft measure. It is part of workforce stability and operational performance.

The appointment also comes at a time when hotel companies across Asia Pacific are placing greater emphasis on career mobility, leadership pipelines and inclusive access to opportunity. As portfolios grow across luxury, premium, select-service and extended-stay segments, employees increasingly expect visible pathways across brands, functions and geographies. A regional HR strategy must help make those pathways clearer and more accessible.

Marriott has also highlighted its workplace recognition across the region, with 15 APEC markets currently Great Place to Work Certified and nine markets earning national Best Workplace rankings. The company has linked these recognitions to its focus on creating an environment where associates can grow, lead and thrive.

Ming Choo’s appointment therefore carries both continuity and change. Marriott’s people-first culture has long been part of its public identity, but the scale and complexity of the APEC region mean that the company will need to keep adapting how that culture is delivered. Growth across 22 markets and territories requires HR leadership that can combine global consistency with local sensitivity.

Her Unilever background may be useful in that respect. Large consumer businesses often require HR leaders to manage transformation, leadership depth and market complexity while aligning people strategy with commercial growth. Marriott’s hospitality context is different, but the challenge of building capability across diverse markets is similar.

For Marriott, the appointment brings in an HR leader with broad regional and transformation experience at a time when the company’s APEC workforce continues to expand. For Ming Choo, the role offers a senior regional mandate within one of the world’s largest hospitality groups.

As Marriott continues to grow across Asia Pacific excluding China, the strength of its people systems will be central to execution. New hotels may expand the map, but leadership, culture and associate capability will determine how consistently the company delivers on its brand promise across the region.
