Navi Mumbai Marriott Hotel has appointed Ashish Shetty as Assistant Director of Human Resources, strengthening its people leadership team as the property continues to build its position within Navi Mumbai’s growing business and leisure hospitality market.

In his new role, Shetty will oversee the hotel’s human resources function, including talent acquisition, employee engagement, learning and development, performance management, compliance and workforce planning. He will work closely with the leadership team to support organisational culture, associate growth and service consistency across the hotel.

Shetty brings more than 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, spanning human resources, learning and development, quality assurance and hotel operations. He began his career in food and beverage operations, spending more than 12 years building operational and guest service experience before moving into human resources and learning and development.

Prior to joining Navi Mumbai Marriott Hotel, Shetty served as Senior Director, Learning and Development at The Leela Hotels, where he led learning, leadership development and talent initiatives across multiple properties. His career also includes leadership roles with Chalet Hotels and The St. Regis Mumbai, giving him experience across luxury hospitality, operational capability building and people-focused initiatives.

The appointment is significant because the Assistant Director of Human Resources role sits close to daily hotel performance. In a property environment, HR is not limited to recruitment or administration. It influences how teams are selected, trained, retained and supported, and how service culture is translated into guest-facing behaviour.

That is especially relevant for Navi Mumbai Marriott Hotel, which operates as a five-star hotel in Vashi’s business district. The property is located near key commercial and business demand generators, including Reliance Corporate Park, Millennium Business Park, IKEA and DY Patil Stadium, and offers 152 rooms, three restaurants, a rooftop pool and a 3,800-square-foot Grand Ballroom.

For a hotel serving both business and leisure travellers, workforce planning and associate engagement are central to operational reliability. The demands placed on teams can vary across rooms, food and beverage, banqueting, meetings, events, spa, housekeeping and guest services. A strong HR function helps ensure that staffing, training and culture are aligned with the service expectations of the brand and the needs of the local market.

Shetty’s background in food and beverage operations gives him an important operational foundation. Learning and development leaders with direct hotel operations experience are often better placed to understand the gap between training content and real service delivery. They know that standards have to work under pressure, during peak occupancy, in banquets, across shifts and in guest-facing situations where judgement matters as much as process.

His experience in quality assurance also adds weight to the role. Hotels increasingly need HR leaders who can connect people development with measurable service outcomes. Training, engagement and performance management become more effective when they are linked to guest feedback, audits, brand standards, departmental productivity and leadership behaviour.

The appointment also reflects a wider trend across Indian hospitality, where hotels are investing more deliberately in talent development and retention. As demand recovers and competition increases in major business and urban markets, properties need stronger internal pipelines, better manager capability and more structured associate engagement. Recruitment alone is not enough. Hotels need systems that help employees grow and stay.

For Marriott-branded properties, this people agenda also sits within a wider service culture. At property level, the challenge is to translate global brand expectations into local operating routines and team behaviour. That work depends heavily on HR leaders who understand both the brand framework and the daily realities of hotel operations.

In Shetty’s case, his career path across operations, learning, quality and human resources gives the hotel a people leader with a broad view of performance. His role will be to support the teams that deliver the guest experience while strengthening the internal culture that makes that service consistent.

Navi Mumbai’s hospitality market is also becoming more strategically important as the region continues to develop as a commercial and infrastructure hub. The hotel’s proximity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and established business districts gives it exposure to evolving corporate, meetings and transient demand.

For Shetty, the appointment represents a return to Marriott International in a senior property HR role. For Navi Mumbai Marriott Hotel, it brings in an experienced hospitality professional with a mix of operational, learning and people leadership capability.

As the property continues to serve a fast-developing market, Shetty’s mandate will be to ensure that talent acquisition, training, engagement and workforce planning support both associate growth and guest experience. In hotel operations, that connection is critical. Strong people systems are not separate from service performance. They are one of the ways service performance is built.
