Anantara Retreat Darjeeling Hills planned for 2031 opening
Minor Hotels plans 35 suites and 35 tented villas on a working tea estate in West Bengal, introducing Anantara Retreats to India in 2031.

Minor Hotels has signed a management agreement for Anantara Retreat Darjeeling Hills, a 70-key property planned for 2031 within West Bengal’s working Tindharia Tea Estate. It will introduce the Anantara Retreats concept to India.
In its announcement on 19 October 2026, the operator said the retreat would combine accommodation with experiences rooted in the estate’s tea production and natural setting.
Anantara Retreat Darjeeling Hills: the development
The scheme comprises 35 suites and 35 tented villas, alongside an Anantara Spa, fitness centre and swimming pool. A 750 sq m meeting and events facility is intended for smaller business groups and destination weddings.
The development partner is JK Urbana Garden Private Limited, a joint venture between JK Urbanscapes Developers Limited and Kaushal Kumbhat. Minor Hotels will manage the property.
The 849-acre estate lies around 40 km from Darjeeling town and 33 km from Bagdogra International Airport. Its slopes rise from approximately 450 to 1,000 metres above sea level. The design is intended to follow that terrain rather than impose a uniform layout on it.
Tea production remains part of the proposition
The plantation will continue operating, with its gardens and factory forming part of the guest programme. The distinction matters: the planned attraction is a functioning agricultural estate, not simply a hotel overlooking tea fields.
Dillip Rajakarier, Group CEO of Minor International, said: “Anantara Retreats belong in places that shape the stay, and Darjeeling does exactly that.”
Kaushal Kumbhat described the partnership as an opportunity to create sustainable livelihoods for the estate community and introduce its tea-growing heritage to an international audience. These are ambitions for the development, rather than outcomes that can yet be assessed.
A broader Indian pipeline
Darjeeling is the fourth Anantara project announced in India during 2026, following Coorg and Kolkata in April and Jadcherla Hyderabad in September. It is the country’s first Anantara Retreat, not the first Indian project carrying the wider Anantara name.
WINC Wire previously covered the Anantara Kolkata signing, an urban development scheduled for 2032. Darjeeling adds a different setting and operating proposition to that pipeline.
The retreat also sits alongside the group’s wider emphasis on wellness. Its recently announced Life Longevity brand addresses another part of that market. The Darjeeling announcement, however, describes Anantara Retreats facilities and experiences; it does not announce a Life Longevity operation at this property.
From signing to operation
For hotel teams, the eventual challenge will be coordinating luxury service, wellness activities and events with an agricultural business that has its own working rhythms. Guest access, safety and the presentation of local expertise will need to work for both operations.
Those are operational considerations, not announced staffing commitments. The release does not set out recruitment numbers or a pre-opening hiring timetable. With opening still planned for 2031, this is a development signing rather than an imminent launch, and the delivery timetable remains a future milestone.
