IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed Holiday Inn Resort Luang Prabang Naluang Hill, a 101-key property scheduled to open in 2027. Announced on 19 October 2026, the agreement with Naluang International Resort and Hotel Limited will take the group into the Lao heritage destination for the first time.

The hilltop resort is planned with guestrooms, suites and villas, four food and beverage venues, a pool, fitness centre and spa. More than 500 square metres of meeting space will serve smaller conferences, corporate retreats and celebrations.

Holiday Inn Resort Luang Prabang expands IHG footprint

IHG already operates Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn & Suites in Vientiane, together accounting for 471 rooms. The signing extends its geographical reach beyond the capital. IHG development executive Shi’ai Liang pointed to improving transport connections and opportunities in leisure, incentives and meetings as reasons for entering Luang Prabang. The announcement did not disclose an investment value or a specific opening month.

The existing Holiday Inn & Suites Vientiane illustrates the group's established approach to mixed demand. Its official hotel listing describes 273 rooms and suites in the Sikhottabong district, around 15 minutes from Wattay International Airport, with kitchenettes in suites intended for longer stays.

For hotel owners, the addition raises a practical commercial question: how far can one resort combine family holidays with event-led demand? The planned accommodation and meeting offer gives sales teams several markets to pursue, but the announcement provides no occupancy, room-rate or event-booking forecasts. Its commercial performance will therefore need to be judged after opening rather than assumed from the signing.

A resort offer backed by a large brand

IHG positions Holiday Inn as an upper-midscale brand with flexible restaurant and bar concepts, access to its distribution systems and loyalty programme, and operating models suited to different markets. Its resort variant is intended for leisure destinations while retaining the wider brand's service proposition. This provides context for the combination of holiday accommodation and business facilities proposed in Luang Prabang.

The wider Holiday Inn Hotels & Resorts network comprised 1,259 open hotels and 228,215 rooms at 30 June 2026, with 318 hotels in development, according to IHG's brand figures.

Heritage shapes the destination

Luang Prabang was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1995. The old town sits between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, with Buddhist religious buildings, traditional Lao houses and colonial-era architecture forming its distinctive visitor offer.

That setting also requires care. UNESCO identifies tourism-related development pressures among the challenges facing the historic town. For hospitality operators, the destination's cultural appeal makes the quality of local partnerships and guest activity planning particularly relevant alongside the usual work of launching rooms, restaurants and event facilities.
