The 13-day Undiscovered Horizons of China itinerary travels from Urumqi to Lhasa, combining private rail travel with cultural excursions across the historic Silk Road.
Golden Eagle Luxury Trains has returned to China after a six-year absence, launching the inaugural journey of its Golden Eagle Silk Road Express.
The company’s new Undiscovered Horizons of China itinerary is a 13-day journey from Urumqi to Lhasa. It takes guests through western China’s historic trading cities, desert landscapes and high-altitude terrain before concluding in the Tibetan capital.
The route includes Turpan, Kashgar, Hotan, Ruoqiang, Dunhuang and Xining. Guests then transfer to the Qinghai-Xizang Railway for the final approach to Lhasa, crossing the Tanggula Pass at 5,072 metres, the railway’s highest point.
Golden Eagle last operated in China in April 2019. Its return introduces a new luxury train and itinerary designed to combine onboard hospitality with access to destinations that remain comparatively unfamiliar to many international travellers.
The early stages of the journey focus on the cultural legacy of the Silk Road. In Turpan, the programme includes visits to the ancient cities of Jiaohe and Gaochang, as well as the Karez Wells irrigation system.
The train then continues to Kashgar, where guests explore the old town, the Apak Khoja Mausoleum and the Gaotai Folk Houses. In Hotan, the itinerary includes an Atlas silk and carpet workshop and an evening visit to Yotkan Ancient City.
Further east, the journey reaches Dunhuang and the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing hundreds of grottoes and an extensive collection of Buddhist murals and sculptures. Guests also visit the dunes surrounding Crescent Lake before continuing towards Xining.
The final rail section follows the Qinghai-Xizang Railway across the Tibetan Plateau. The route passes snow-covered mountains, remote valleys and the Tanggula Pass before arriving in Lhasa.
Three nights in Lhasa allow time for guided visits to Norbulingka, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Market and the Potala Palace. The itinerary concludes with a farewell dinner and private transfers to Lhasa Airport.
Accommodation includes seven nights aboard the Golden Eagle Silk Road Express, one night aboard the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, one night at Conrad Urumqi and three nights at The St. Regis Lhasa. The programme also includes meals, beverages, excursions, transfers, gratuities and the services of a UK-registered doctor.
The launch reflects growing interest in rail journeys that position the journey itself as a central part of the travel experience. For luxury hospitality operators, such itineraries also create opportunities to connect accommodation, dining, cultural interpretation and destination access within a single curated product.
The inaugural 2026 departure runs from 12 to 24 September. Published prices begin at $19,900 per person for twin accommodation in Superior Class.
