Angelo Zuccala has been appointed general manager of InterContinental Athénée Palace Bucharest while retaining his role as Area General Manager, IHG Hotels & Resorts Southern Europe Luxury & Lifestyle, according to the hotel’s announcement.

Angelo Zuccala takes on Bucharest leadership

The announcement was published on 20 October 2026. It does not specify a separate effective date.

A career across IHG hotels

Zuccala brings more than 30 years of hospitality experience. His previous leadership roles include the former InterContinental Bucharest, Crowne Plaza Bucharest, InterContinental Sofia and Regent in Montenegro. His background spans commercial functions, food and beverage, operations and general management, the announcement states.

A heritage hotel with a broad operating remit

Athénée Palace opened in 1914. ANA Hotels acquired the property in 2005, and its recent history includes a renovation programme followed by the arrival of the InterContinental brand in 2023. The hotel’s own history places that transition within a much longer record of refurbishment and adaptation.

IHG’s 2022 signing announcement described the project as an extension of its relationship with ANA Hotels, which already owned and operated Crowne Plaza Bucharest. The current Athénée Palace website identifies ANA Hotels SRL as owner and HH Hotels (Romania) SRL as manager.

The property serves more than the overnight accommodation market. Its meetings and events offer covers 1,850 square metres, with two ballrooms and ten additional meeting rooms. Le Diplomate, a listed national heritage ballroom, accommodates up to 350 guests. That makes conferences, receptions and other events a substantial part of the hotel’s operating environment.

Its current IHG listing also highlights JORJ Restaurant, Café Athénée, Club InterContinental, a spa and an indoor pool. The club includes an outdoor terrace and a private meeting room, adding a further service setting alongside the hotel’s public venues.

What the dual role means for leadership

For hospitality leaders, the appointment is a useful example of property management and regional oversight sitting with the same executive. The practical question is how those responsibilities are supported locally, particularly in a hotel combining accommodation, dining, wellness and large events.

That is an operational consideration rather than an announced restructuring. Clear delegation, consistent departmental standards and a strong management team will be important to making such a remit work. The appointment alone does not establish changes to staffing, reporting lines or investment plans, and it should not be read as evidence that any have been agreed.
