Rippling Review: The Platform That Wants to Run Your Entire Business

Most HR software promises simplicity, then quietly creates chaos. Factorial HR is one of the rare exceptions...

Most HR software solves one problem. Rippling wants to solve all of them. Founded in San Francisco in 2016 and now valued at over $13 billion, Rippling has built a unified platform that connects HR, payroll, IT and finance into a single system. When you hire someone, it can order their laptop, set up their email, enrol them in benefits and add them to payroll automatically.

We tested Rippling with UK businesses ranging from 20-person startups to 200-employee professional services firms. What we found was a genuinely impressive platform with serious automation capabilities, but one that demands investment in setup and comes at a premium price point.

The Big Picture

Rippling is not just HR software. It is an operating system for employee data that spans four core areas: Human Capital Management (payroll, benefits, time tracking, recruiting, performance), IT (device management, app provisioning, identity and access), Finance (corporate cards, expense management, bill pay) and Global (employer of record services in 185+ countries).

Pricing starts at around £7 per user per month for core HR, but most businesses will pay more once they add modules. Rippling does not publish fixed prices. Instead, it provides custom quotes based on your specific requirements.

The platform is built around a single employee record. Change someone’s job title, and their system access, pay rate, benefits eligibility and reporting line can all update automatically. This unified data model is what sets Rippling apart from traditional HR tools.

Why It Works

Automation That Actually Delivers

Rippling’s Workflow Studio lets you build automated processes that would require multiple tools elsewhere. A London fintech we spoke with uses it to trigger a sequence when someone is promoted: update payroll, adjust system permissions, notify the finance team and schedule a benefits review meeting. What used to involve five people and three systems now happens automatically.

The platform claims to automate 95% of payroll administration. In testing, we found this credible. Tax calculations, pension contributions, statutory payments and deductions all run without manual intervention once configured correctly.

Global Capability Built In

If you are hiring internationally, Rippling is genuinely strong. Its Employer of Record service covers 185+ countries, allowing you to hire employees without setting up local entities. Global payroll handles multiple currencies, tax jurisdictions and compliance requirements from a single dashboard.

A Manchester-based SaaS company told us they use Rippling to manage employees in the UK, Germany and the US. “Before Rippling, we had three separate payroll providers and no visibility across the business. Now everything is in one place.”

IT and HR Finally Connected

This is where Rippling genuinely differentiates. When you onboard someone, the system can ship a pre-configured laptop, set up their email and Slack accounts, provision the right software licences and grant appropriate system access. When they leave, all of that is revoked automatically. Rippling claims 90-second onboarding, and while real-world implementation takes longer, the speed improvement over manual processes is significant.

For businesses with remote or hybrid teams, this integration solves a genuine pain point. HR and IT no longer need to coordinate manually on every hire and departure.

Is Rippling Right for You?

Rippling is a powerful platform, but it is not for everyone. Here is how to know if it fits.

Rippling is ideal if you…

  • Want to unify HR, IT and finance operations under one platform
  • Have remote or hybrid teams needing device provisioning and app management
  • Are hiring internationally and want one system for global payroll and compliance
  • Have the internal capacity to invest in proper setup and configuration
  • Value automation and are comfortable with technology-forward solutions

You might prefer an alternative if you…

  • Want simple, straightforward HR without IT or finance complexity (consider BambooHR)
  • Have a small team and limited budget for HR software (Rippling’s costs add up with modules)
  • Prefer published, transparent pricing rather than custom quotes
  • Need a free trial before committing (Rippling offers demos but no self-service trial)

Verdict

Rippling is genuinely ambitious. It is trying to be the operating system for modern businesses, connecting employee data across HR, IT and finance in ways that traditional tools cannot match. For companies frustrated by disconnected systems and manual handoffs between departments, that vision is compelling.

The platform delivers on its automation promises. Onboarding, offboarding, payroll and compliance processes that once required multiple people and tools can genuinely run automatically. The global capabilities are strong, and the IT integration is unique in the HR software market.

However, this power comes with complexity. Setup requires investment. Pricing is opaque and can climb quickly as you add modules. And for businesses that simply need solid HR software without the IT and finance integration, Rippling may be more than necessary.

If you are a growing, tech-forward business with international ambitions and the appetite to configure a sophisticated platform properly, Rippling is worth a demo. If you want something simpler that just works out of the box, look elsewhere.

Before You Start

Request a detailed quote. Rippling’s modular pricing means costs vary significantly. Get a breakdown for your specific requirements before committing.

Plan for implementation time. Proper setup takes weeks, not days. Budget internal resource for configuration and testing.

Understand contract terms. Some users report being charged for historical employee counts. Clarify billing terms before signing.

Assess your actual needs. If you do not need IT management or global payroll, simpler platforms may offer better value.
