The Sen by Nakul Sen Opens as Intimate Four-Suite Retreat Near Lansdowne

Red Coral Travel Experiences has added The Sen by Nakul Sen to its boutique property portfolio, a design-led mountain retreat positioned on a quiet ridge just outside Lansdowne in Uttarakhand. The intimate property comprises four suites and represents the latest addition to India’s expanding micro-luxury segment.

The retreat’s architecture prioritises natural light and landscape integration. Large glass panels frame forest views, while clean lines and warm material choices define the interior spaces. Mornings bring drifting clouds and birdsong; evenings transition to time by the fire.

Design Philosophy and Scale

The Sen operates at the intimate end of boutique hospitality. With only four suites, the property caters to travellers who prioritise privacy and experience over scale – a growing segment in India’s boutique hotel market, which generated US$740.6 million in 2024 and is projected to reach US$1.28 billion by 2030.

The architecture brings the outdoors in through naturally lit spaces and considered material choices. This design-forward approach positions The Sen alongside a broader movement of small-scale Himalayan retreats that emphasise architecture, landscape connection, and personalised service.

Culinary and Experience Programming

Dining at The Sen unfolds across multiple settings rather than a single restaurant space. Guests can expect streamside lunches with feet in the water, picnics among the pine forests, and Pahadi dinners served by candlelight and bonfire.

Pahadi cuisine – the mountain food tradition of Uttarakhand’s Garhwal and Kumaon regions – emphasises locally sourced ingredients, minimal spicing, and slow-cooking techniques. Traditional preparations feature local grains like mandua (finger millet) and jhangora (barnyard millet), protein-rich lentils suited to mountain climates, and distinctive flavours from jakhiya (wild mustard) and other regional herbs.

Beyond dining, the property offers forest drives, village walks, yoga sessions in woodland settings, and private sundowners on nearby hilltops – experiences designed to connect guests with the surrounding landscape.

Destination Context

Lansdowne sits at approximately 1,700 metres above sea level in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, surrounded by dense oak and blue pine forests. Established as a military garrison under British colonial rule in 1887, the hill station remains home to the Garhwal Rifles regiment and retains colonial-era churches and architecture.

The destination is approximately 250 kilometres from Delhi, making it one of the closest hill stations to the capital. Unlike busier alternatives such as Nainital or Mussoorie, Lansdowne has remained relatively undeveloped and uncrowded – characteristics that align with The Sen’s positioning as a retreat for those seeking quiet rather than activity.

Red Coral’s Portfolio Strategy

Red Coral Travel Experiences operates as a boutique travel marketing and representation company based in Gurugram, founded by hospitality professionals Shobha Chadha and Vinay Kala. The company partners with standalone boutique resorts, wildlife lodges, and heritage homestays across India, providing sales, marketing, and reservation services to properties that lack the scale for independent distribution.

The portfolio spans jungle lodges in central India, Himalayan retreats, coastal properties in the south, and heritage homestays in Rajasthan. Recent additions include Bijapur Lodge Jawai, a six-suite wildlife property in Rajasthan’s Aravalli foothills.

The Sen joins Red Coral’s Himalayan collection alongside properties such as Nine Furlongs in Binsar and Abbotsford in Nainital, extending the company’s presence in Uttarakhand’s boutique accommodation segment.
