Minor Hotels has signed a management contract to bring its luxury Anantara Hotels, Resorts and Spas brand to Kolkata for the first time, anchoring the hospitality component of Eastern India’s first World Trade Centre and marking a significant step in the group’s India expansion strategy.

The Anantara Kolkata Hotel will form part of the World Trade Centre Salt Lake, an 11-acre mixed-use development in Sector V being developed as a joint venture between Aryan Realty and Merlin Group. The total project is valued at INR 2,400 crore. The hotel component alone carries an estimated development cost of INR 200 crore. Minor Hotels will operate the property under a management contract without equity participation, and the hotel is scheduled to open in 2032.

The signing represents two firsts simultaneously: Anantara’s entry into Kolkata and the brand’s debut as an urban property in India. All of Minor Hotels’ existing and confirmed India pipeline to date has been resort-facing. The Kolkata signing signals a deliberate shift toward the country’s urban commercial markets.

What the hotel will offer

Anantara Kolkata will feature approximately 170 guest rooms and suites, two dining venues including an all-day restaurant and a speciality rooftop restaurant, and a lobby lounge. Meeting and events infrastructure will include a ballroom and flexible conference spaces, positioning the property to serve Kolkata’s growing MICE demand. Leisure facilities will comprise an Anantara Spa and wellness centre, gym and swimming pool.

The hotel will sit within the WTC Salt Lake development alongside Grade A premium office space and retail components, approximately 10 kilometres from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Sector V is Kolkata’s established IT and corporate corridor, home to a dense concentration of national and multinational companies, and benefits from proximity to premium residential neighbourhoods, creating a dual demand base of business and lifestyle guests.

The WTC context

The World Trade Centre Salt Lake is the first WTC in Eastern India, a designation that carries both symbolic and commercial weight. WTC-branded developments function as integrated business ecosystems, and the inclusion of a luxury hotel has been central to the proposition from the outset. Merlin Group Chairman Sushil Mohta described the partnership as intended to redefine how business and hospitality converge in Eastern India.

Aryan Realty Co-Chairman Sanjay Saraf positioned the development as a long-term asset for the region, saying the WTC Kolkata would strengthen the city’s standing as a regional business and cultural centre and raise its overall hospitality offering.

Minor Hotels’ India ambitions

Minor Hotels, founded in Thailand by William Heinecke and now operating more than 640 hotels, resorts and branded residences across 63 countries, launched the Anantara brand in 2001. Its India footprint opened formally in 2025 with the launch of Anantara Jewel Bagh Jaipur Hotel, its first property in the country. Two further signings followed in quick succession: Avani+ Sunray Beach Visakhapatnam Resort and Anantara Zanti Coorg Resort, both slated for 2028 openings.

The Kolkata signing is the fourth India agreement and the most commercially complex, given its urban location and its integration into a large-scale mixed-use development. The group has stated a target of reaching 50 properties in India over the next decade, a scale that will require continued diversification across both resort and city segments.

William Heinecke, Founder and Chairman of Minor International, the parent company of Minor Hotels, said that signing Anantara Kolkata as the group’s first urban Anantara in India represents an important step in its growth in the country and reflects the brand’s versatility across both city and resort settings.

Kolkata’s moment as a luxury hospitality market

Kolkata has long been underserved relative to its scale and economic weight. As India’s third-largest metropolitan area and the commercial capital of the east, the city has attracted meaningful corporate investment in sectors including technology, financial services and logistics, yet its branded luxury hotel supply has remained thin compared to Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru.

The WTC Salt Lake development accelerates that trajectory. A globally recognised mixed-use format, anchored by a luxury brand with strong MICE credentials, addresses a gap that has historically pushed high-value events and executive stays out of Kolkata to other cities. If the office component leases strongly, the hotel’s demand case becomes considerably more robust ahead of its 2032 opening.

For Minor Hotels, the urban India play is also a competitive positioning move. Several international groups are now building India pipelines in earnest, and establishing early presence in a city at the beginning of its luxury hospitality cycle carries long-term strategic value that late-mover signings rarely replicate.
