Sudeep Jain, Managing Director of South West Asia at IHG Hotels & Resorts, has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at the 16th Hotelier India Awards. The recognition honours more than two decades of leadership that has reshaped IHG’s presence across India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.
The Hall of Fame award celebrates hospitality leaders whose contributions extend beyond commercial success to lasting industry influence. Previous recipients include Kapil Chopra of The Postcard Hotel, Anuraag Bhatnagar of The Leela Palaces, and KB Kachru of Radisson Hotel Group – executives whose careers have defined standards across the sector.
Jain assumed the Managing Director role in January 2020, inheriting a portfolio of 39 hotels across five brands. Under his leadership, IHG has achieved significant growth milestones. The company reached 50 operational hotels in India by May 2025, with a further 70 properties in the development pipeline. IHG has stated its ambition to more than double its Indian portfolio over the next five years.
The expansion strategy has balanced scale with premiumisation. In 2024 alone, IHG signed 18 new hotels in India, with approximately 30% in premium and luxury segments. The pipeline now includes five InterContinental hotels, 10 Crowne Plaza properties and five voco hotels scheduled to open within the next two to five years.
This dual-track approach – scaling mainstream brands like Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express whilst simultaneously building luxury and lifestyle credentials – reflects the complexity of India’s hospitality market. The essentials portfolio continues to capture domestic tourism demand, whilst the premium expansion targets business travellers and high-value leisure guests seeking international brand standards.
Jain’s approach to regional leadership has emphasised aligning global brand standards with local market realities. His oversight covers both development and operations functions, a dual mandate that enables integrated decision-making across the hotel lifecycle. This structure has supported IHG’s positioning as what the company describes as a “trustworthy partner” for hotel owners across the region.
Before joining IHG in 2017 as Vice President of Development for South West Asia, Jain held senior roles at Starwood Hotels & Resorts, where he served as Vice President of Acquisitions & Development for South Asia. At Starwood, he led his team to sign more than 50 deals across the region over three years. His earlier career included positions at Jones Lang LaSalle’s Hotels & Hospitality Group, Bain & Company, and Merrill Lynch.
His academic credentials include degrees from Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School, along with professional development at Cornell University’s hotel administration programme. This combination of consulting, investment banking and hospitality experience has informed his development-focused approach to regional leadership.
Industry recognition has followed consistently. Jain was named among the Top 100 Most Influential People in hospitality by Hotelier Magazine in 2013. He has featured regularly on Hotelier India’s Power List, with the publication noting his people-centric leadership style and emphasis on transparent communication with stakeholders.
His tenure has coincided with India’s emergence as a strategic priority for global hotel groups. Rising disposable incomes, expanding domestic travel, and the development of new tourism destinations have created conditions for aggressive brand expansion. IHG has capitalised on this momentum, moving beyond established metropolitan markets into secondary cities including Amritsar, Lucknow, Dehradun and Changanassery.
The Hall of Fame induction reflects broader momentum in Indian hospitality. IHG’s 50th hotel opening in India – Crowne Plaza Lucknow – underscored the company’s confidence in domestic demand and rising tourism. Occupancy rates across IHG’s Indian portfolio have exceeded pre-pandemic levels, with RevPAR showing substantial growth compared to both 2019 and recent years.
For talent and HR leaders, Jain’s recognition highlights the growing emphasis on stakeholder management and people development in hospitality leadership. His stated philosophy prioritises enabling colleagues to take calculated risks, a practice he credits with building resilient teams capable of navigating challenging operating environments.
The recognition arrives as international hotel groups intensify competition for Indian market share. With the country’s middle class expanding and domestic travel demand accelerating, leadership that can balance aggressive development targets with operational excellence has become increasingly valuable. The sector’s growth trajectory has attracted renewed investment attention, making experienced regional leaders essential to execution.
Jain’s Hall of Fame induction positions him alongside executives who have shaped the architecture of Indian hospitality over decades – a recognition of sustained contribution rather than single achievements. For IHG, the award reinforces the company’s regional leadership credentials at a moment when owner confidence and development momentum remain critical competitive advantages.
