Hospitality has a data problem. Not a collection problem – that part is working rather well. The average hotel stay now generates dozens of data touchpoints before a guest even checks in. Reframe privacy as the new discretion
Hospitality has always understood discretion. You don’t share a guest’s room number with someone who walks up to the desk and asks. You don’t discuss dietary requirements in a corridor. Data privacy is not a new concept – it is discretion, updated for the tools you are now running.
When IHG deployed AI-powered smart room suites using Baidu’s DuerOS platform across its InterContinental properties in China, the core challenge was the same one every operator faces: guests interacting with intelligent systems they hadn’t fully opted into. The training worked because it was grounded in something teams already understood: why discretion matters, and what it costs when it breaks.
Build scenarios around your actual systems. Walk your team through one guest’s complete data journey: booking engine, pre-arrival communications, AI concierge, loyalty recognition at check-in, post-stay marketing trigger. At each step, the question is the same – what data is the system using, did the guest consent to this, and what do you say if they ask? That is not a slide deck exercise. Lead with capability, not prohibition
Most AI and data training is a list of things not to do. Clear rules matter – but if your programme is primarily restrictive, you have already told your team that AI is something to be afraid of. That is the wrong message, and it produces the wrong behaviour.
