Hyatt targets five-fold expansion in India over next five years

CEO Mark Hoplamazian says the group sees India as a long-term investment market, driven by domestic travel, urbanisation and rising consumer spending.

Hyatt Hotels Corporation is setting a significantly more ambitious growth trajectory for India, with President and CEO Mark S. Hoplamazian saying the group expects its hotel footprint in the country to increase five-fold over the next five years.

Speaking at the HOPE conference in Goa, Hoplamazian said the scale of growth in India’s hospitality industry could support a Hyatt network five times larger than it is today.

Hyatt currently operates 55 hotels in India, including properties in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The new ambition represents a substantial step beyond the company’s earlier target of reaching 100 hotels in the country by 2030.

The strategy reflects Hyatt’s confidence in the continued expansion of India’s domestic travel market.

Rising disposable incomes, rapid urbanisation and a growing appetite for leisure travel are changing both the scale and geography of hotel demand. Hyatt is consequently looking beyond established gateway cities as it develops its pipeline across leisure destinations, spiritual centres and select tier-two and tier-three markets.

The group is also maintaining a strong focus on the premium, luxury and lifestyle segments rather than pursuing growth solely through scale.

Hyatt entered India with Hyatt Regency New Delhi in 1983 and has since developed a portfolio spanning brands including Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Centric, Andaz, Hyatt Place and JdV by Hyatt.

Its development momentum has accelerated in recent years. Deals signed during 2025 added nearly 5,000 rooms to Hyatt’s India and Southwest Asia pipeline, according to the company.

In April, Hyatt also created the role of President, India & Southwest Asia, appointing Vikas Chawla to lead its next phase of regional growth. The company said it plans to deepen its presence in major markets including Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi and Hyderabad while increasing its exposure to emerging destinations.

India is becoming an increasingly important battleground for international hotel groups.

Hilton has outlined its own aggressive expansion plans, while domestic operators are adding inventory as demand for branded accommodation grows. Hyatt’s five-fold ambition indicates that the company now sees considerably more room for branded premium hospitality than its previous 100-hotel target suggested.

Hoplamazian characterised India as a long-term investment opportunity rather than a short-term growth story.

For Hyatt, the challenge will now be converting that confidence into development agreements and openings while maintaining the differentiated positioning on which much of its luxury and lifestyle strategy depends.
