HR Veteran Karl Wood Offers Antidote to Burnout Culture with New Leadership Book

Leadership author Karl Wood will release If Bears Did Leadership on 27 February 2026, a book that uses forest metaphors and illustrated storytelling to challenge the prevailing culture of urgency and performative management.

Wood, a senior people and culture professional with nearly three decades of international hospitality and HR experience, presents twelve leadership themes through the lens of bears as quiet teachers rather than heroic symbols. The approach offers a deliberate counterpoint to what he describes as increasingly loud, crisis-driven leadership styles.

The timing appears strategic. Recent industry research shows leadership burnout has reached critical levels, with over 80% of workers reporting they feel burnt out to some degree. According to DDI’s Global Leadership Forecast 2025, 71% of leaders report significantly higher stress since stepping into their current roles.

Four in ten stressed leaders have considered leaving their positions entirely to improve their wellbeing.

If Bears Did Leadership advocates for presence, consistency and care – qualities Wood argues have been overshadowed by speed, status and performance in modern workplaces. Rather than presenting leadership as a set of rigid frameworks or quick fixes, the book uses narrative and metaphor to examine everyday behaviours that build trust over time.

This approach aligns with growing evidence that consistent, authentic leadership drives organisational outcomes. Research from the Center for Creative Leadership demonstrates that in high-trust environments, teams show greater productive energy, creativity and results. Studies consistently identify consistency as one of three critical elements in building leadership trust, alongside positive relationships and sound judgement.

Wood founded WINC HR Strategy and Solutions in Australia in 2011, extending operations to the UK in 2014. His career spans luxury hospitality venues including the Park Hyatt in Sydney and the Regent in Shanghai, along with executive roles at Allwyn UK during the national lottery transition and positions across creative and sports management sectors.

He holds the Chartered FCIPD and FCPHR designations and recently completed an Executive MBA at the University of East London.

The book features illustrations by David Hallangen, a UK-based illustrator whose portfolio includes work for clients ranging from Disney and the BBC to the NHS and pharmaceutical companies. Each of the twelve themes follows a four-week rhythm of reflection, thinking, action and rest – a structure designed to support individual development and team discussion without adding to workplace pressure.

Dr S.Y. Quraishi, former Chief Election Commissioner of India, provides the foreword. Quraishi served as India’s 17th Chief Election Commissioner from 2010 to 2012, overseeing elections for more than 800 million voters. His experience leading one of the world’s largest democratic institutions reinforces the book’s emphasis on ethical, humane leadership and long-term responsibility.

The leadership development market has seen renewed interest in narrative approaches as organisations grapple with engagement challenges. Research in Administrative Sciences found that metaphors and storytelling serve as powerful tools for communicating complex concepts, helping leaders cultivate trust and build shared values with their teams, particularly during periods of uncertainty.

Wood positions If Bears Did Leadership as both a lasting resource and a thoughtful gift, designed for leaders, managers, HR professionals and organisations seeking what he calls a steadier, wiser approach to leadership in complex and demanding environments.

The book will be available online and through major retail outlets across the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. You can pre-order your copy here.
